The promised Messiah was expected. Prophets had been telling of his arrival for centuries. The people were full of desire for their Savior. The anticipation gave them great hope. But it didn’t happen when they thought it would. For some, the wait was unbearably long, for others it was too soon, and for Mary and Joseph the timing couldn’t have been worse.

The Christmas story reminds us that God uses unexpected people: people who are viewed as worthless or less-than in society, people who have visible weaknesses and deficiencies. Our low standing, our powerlessness, and our deficiencies are never an excuse. All of these things just give us greater access to God’s strength.

The story of Zacchaeus is an example of God’s unexpected love at work. It began with Jesus’ initiation, followed by the crowd’s aggravation, leading to Zaccheus’ motivation, and ultimately ending in salvation for many.
